Definition

Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that removes hair follicles from one part of the body, called the 'donor site', to a bald or balding part of the body known as the 'recipient site'.

In this minimally invasive procedure, grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding (like the back of the head) are transplanted to the bald scalp.

Hair transplantation can also be used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair, pubic hair and to fill in scars caused by accidents or surgery such as face-lifts and previous hair transplants. Hair transplantation differs from skin grafting in those grafts contain almost all the epidermis and dermis surrounding the hair follicle, and many tiny grafts are transplanted rather than a single strip of skin.

Am I a good candidate?

The candidates for hair transplantation are:

People who suffer of severe hair loss and hereditary baldness.

People who have a strong donor area.

People with good health, who do not suffer of certain diseases that may impede hair transplantation.

People older than 22 years of age.

Pre-operation

Pre-operative assessment and planning

At an initial consultation, the surgeon analyzes the patient's scalp, discusses their preferences and expectations, and advises them on the best approach (e.g., single vs. multiple sessions) and what results might reasonably be expected.

Pre-operative folliscopy will help to know the actual existing density of hair so that postoperative results of newly transplanted hair grafts can be accurately assessed.

Some patients may benefit from preoperative topical minoxidil application and vitamins.

For several days before surgery, the patient refrains from using any medicines which might result in intraoperative bleeding and resultant poor grafting. Alcohol and smoking can contribute to poor graft survival.

You must stop drinking green tea, coffee, or alcohol for 3 days before the operation, and 3 days after the operation.

You must stop taking vitamins, aspirin, or blood thinners for a week before the operation, and 3 days after the operation.

Any medications you take must be known by your doctor.

You must stop smoking cigarettes and hookahs for 3 days before the operation, and 3 days after the operation, or reduce it to the minimum possible level.

Stop Smoking. You must stop smoking AT LEAST 24 hours before your hair transplant surgery.

Avoid alcohol.

Stop taking certain medications.

Don't take multivitamins.

Do not get a haircut.

Massage the scalp.

Post-Operation

Postoperative antibiotics are commonly prescribed to prevent wound or graft infections.

After the main stages of a hair transplant are completed, it is important to follow correct aftercare procedures. This includes washing the donor and implantation areas, protecting the transplanted grafts the elements, excessive rubbing, impacts, and direct sunlight. The surgeon will also schedule a follow-up a day after the hair transplant to check on the recovery progress.

Instructions that must be followed after the operation:

You must sleep on your back for 5 days using the medical pad that we will provide you.

Avoid bending and lowering your head for 3 days after the operation (for prayers, please pray as you are sitting, regular praying positions are prohibited).

Do not wear anything on the head for 20 days.

Even, when necessary, please do not wear anything tight on your head. No pressure is allowed on your scalp, (if you use Hijab, we will teach you how to wear it in a special way that will not harm the implanted grafts).

Do not take any drugs or substances that dilute the blood (alcohol - green tea - coffee - soft drinks) for a week at least.

Avoid scratching or rubbing the transplanted area.

Follow-up the washing just as you will be instructed, for 10 days.

Do not take shower/bath for 15 days.

Do not perform light exercises for 20 days, and extreme sports for 3 months.

No sexual intercourse for 3 days.

You can cut your hair with scissors or a razor machine after 3 months of the operation.

You can shave your hair with razor blades after one year of operation.

You cannot dye your hair for 6 months after the operation.

Do not use a hairdryer on the implanted area for a month.

Use washing method after 10 days of operation.

Ten days after the operation we completely dispense with lotion (cream) and we will wash only using medical shampoo recommended by the doctor.

Apply shampoo and rub the scalp with the palm of your hand and fingers to clean the layer of dandruff that will appear after the first washing stages.

Good rubbing at this stage is important considering not rubbing nails in our attempt to remove the layer of dandruff.

Washing is done daily for at least a week to ensure that the dandruff layer is completely removed. During this period, the dandruff layer will fall off with the implanted hair of course, with the bulb remaining inside the scalp, which will begin to grow for about a month and a half.

Notes:

Do not use hot water for 15 days.

Do not use a towel or bath dryer to dry the hair, as it is preferable to use natural air for drying through a soft cloth or medical gauze and is only in contact with the scalp without rubbing or stirring.

Alternative techniques

Stem Cell Hair Loss Treatment

Stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine, promotes the repair response of diseased, dysfunctional, or injured tissue using stem cells or their derivatives. It is the next chapter in organ transplantation and uses cells instead of donor organs, which are limited in supply.

Thanks to recent advances in scientific research, new hair treatments for hair follicle stem cells are emerging. The engineering of follicular stem cells arguably represents the future of the fight against baldness and all other forms of alopecia.

PRP Hair Loss Treatment

Platelet-Rich Plasma (commonly referred to as PRP) is a simple, non-surgical procedure that uses a natural product created from your own body. A small amount of blood is drawn from you and placed in a sterile tube that is spun down in a centrifuge to separate the different components of the blood.

Red and white blood cells are divided from the platelets and the plasma (the clear fluid). This plasma now contains a higher than a normal number of platelets and is called platelet-rich plasma, or PRP.
